Eduardo Chaves, a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh (1972), has a career that spans academic, government, business, and third sector areas.  He was, for 35 years, until his retirement in 2006, Professor of Philosophy and Education at one of Brazil's top universities, the State University of Campinas, where he was Director of Graduate Studies and Academic Dean at the School of Education and Vice-Provost for Administration of the whole University.

His research was centered mostly on K-12 Education, especially on issues of Critical Thinking and the Use of Technology to Promote Better Learning Outcomes.

Beginning in 1980 he became involved in the issue of how technology can be used to realize the potential and improve the performance of both individuals and institutions, creating, in 1983, a pioneer Research Center at the University to study how technology can be leveraged to improve students' learning outcomes.

Dr Chaves was also summoned, several times, by the government of his state (the State of Sao Paulo, in Brazil), to occupy important positions in government, the most important being Adjunct Secretary for Higher Education.

Dr Chaves has also been active, since 1999, in several foundations and other third sector institutions. In this capacity he created and coordinated, for several years, the UNESCO Chair of Education and Human Development at the Ayrton Senna Institute in Brazil, was President of the Lumiar Institute, and has, since 2003, has been a member of the International Advisory Board of Microsoft's "Partners in Learning" program, the company's global initiative to improve K-12 education.
